Sprain (Ligament Injury)
What is a Sprain?
A sprain occurs when a joint moves beyond its normal range, causing the ligament to overstretch or partially tear. Everyday events such as rolling an ankle, twisting a wrist, or wrenching the neck or back are all forms of sprain. Though often dismissed as minor, insufficient early care easily leads to chronic pain and recurrent injury.
- Missing a step on stairs
- Sudden direction changes or jump landings during exercise
- Twisting the back while lifting a heavy object
- External impact such as traffic accidents or falls
Sprain Grades (Severity)
Grade 1 (Mild)
Microscopic damage with ligament stretching. Pain and swelling are minor, and joint stability is maintained.
Grade 2 (Moderate)
Partial ligament tear. Marked swelling, bruising, and pain make weight-bearing difficult, with a sense of joint instability.
Grade 3 (Severe)
Complete ligament rupture. The joint becomes unstable with severe pain and swelling. Imaging and detailed evaluation are required.
Acute-Phase First Aid — R.I.C.E.
Care within the first 48–72 hours after injury has a major impact on the speed of recovery.
Rest
Stop using the injured area and rest.
Ice
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling and inflammation.
Compression
Use an elastic bandage or similar to gently compress and limit swelling.
Elevation
Keep the injured area above heart level to reduce swelling.
Osundosun's Approach to Sprains
Because a sprain involves combined damage to ligaments, muscles, and fascia, a combined approach of acupuncture, cupping, pharmacopuncture, and chuna can be used for acute-phase pain relief and functional recovery.
Acupuncture relaxes surrounding muscle tension, and ultrasound-guided pharmacopuncture allows precise care of the injured ligament. During recovery, chuna therapy corrects joint alignment to help prevent recurrence.
With sprains, the early phase truly matters.
Even a seemingly minor twist can lead to chronic pain and repeated injury if left untreated.
Accurate diagnosis and phase-specific care support a full recovery.
